Selecting Magnetic Strength for a Push-Pull Guidance Tool

Higher is not always better. Magnetic strength must be matched to the tool's lever arm and intended use — not maximised as a specification in isolation.

PSC's Load-It® MagHead range uses two ratings: 550 lb on the 75 mm head for fixed-length tools, and 275 lb on the 60 mm head for the FG008 fibreglass telescopic pole. The temptation is to read these as a hierarchy. This article explains why that reading is incorrect — and what actually drives the selection between them.

What Actually Drives Magnetic Strength Selection

The correct magnetic strength for a given tool is determined by the mechanical system the magnet is part of, not by a preference for maximum holding force. The relevant factors:

  • Tool length and leverage — a longer lever arm changes how much force is required throughout the task, including intentional disengagement once the load is landed.
  • Intended application — fixed-length tools operate in a consistent handling posture; a telescopic pole across a range of extensions, each with different characteristics.
  • Operator control during guidance — the rating must remain within the range an operator can manage comfortably while the interface stays engaged.
  • Ease of intentional disengagement — once the load is landed, the rating must allow clean removal without excessive effort at whatever leverage applies.

Why the Telescopic Pole Uses a Lower Rating

The FG008's 60 mm, 275 lb head is not a cost-reduced component. It is the rating deliberately matched to the leverage present when the pole is extended toward its full 8 ft reach. A 75 mm, 550 lb head at that same extension would present significantly more resistance to intentional disengagement than an operator could comfortably manage — working against the operator rather than for them.

Selection Principle

Select the magnetic interface appropriate to the tool and its leverage — not simply the strongest rating available. The objective is a matched system, not a maximised specification. If the task requires a fixed-length tool, the 550 lb head is correct. If it requires a telescopic pole, the 275 lb head is correct. The rating follows from the tool type.
