The rack slot entry is one of the most consistent pinch point scenarios in steel service centres and plate storage facilities. The plate descends, the gap closes, and the hand is traditionally placed inside it.
The Exposure
Guiding a steel plate into a vertical slot storage rack is a high-repetition task in service centres and fabrication facilities. The consistent geometry of the task — same rack, same slot, same approach angle — makes it one of the clearest cases for a fixed engineering control rather than an ad hoc manual correction.
As the plate descends into the rack slot, the gap between the plate's face and the rack structure closes progressively. An operator who places a hand on the plate's face to guide it into the slot has their fingers in a gap that is actively closing.
If the plate swings even slightly, or if the crane travels fractionally further than intended, the hand has nowhere to go. This is a classic, repeatable, preventable pinch point.

High-Repetition Considerations
Storage rack guidance is a high-frequency task. In a busy service centre, the same motion may be performed dozens of times per shift.
Surface condition on service centre plate stock varies significantly — clean cut plate, mill-scaled hot-rolled plate, and partially rusted material may all be handled in the same session. Verify attachment on each new plate rather than assuming uniform engagement from the previous cycle.
